Located a few minutes south of Tulum, Muyil is an outstanding destination to experience the rich birdlife of the Yucatán Peninsula while learning about both the living Maya culture and the ancient Maya civilization. We begin by birding through a Maya community before entering the archaeological site of Muyil, located within the northern section of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
Our route takes us through a remarkable variety of habitats, including mature tropical forest, freshwater wetlands, and seasonally flooded jungle. A raised boardwalk leads us through this unique ecosystem to the edge of a beautiful freshwater lagoon, providing excellent birding opportunities throughout the morning.
Depending on the season, it is possible to identify between 50 and 80 bird species during the excursion.
For those wishing to explore more of Sian Ka'an, there is the option to extend the experience with a boat ride across two lagoons followed by the famous lazy river float.
Drifting gently through crystal-clear canals while seated on life vests, surrounded by mangroves, orchids, and bromeliads, is one of the most memorable nature experiences in the Yucatán Peninsula. Along the way, there are opportunities to observe additional bird species while discovering more of this extraordinary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
