Located on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, the charming fishing village of Río Lagartos is the gateway to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protecting more than 150,000 acres (60,000 hectares) of lagoons, marshes, mangroves, mudflats, and coastal habitats.

This extraordinary mosaic of ecosystems provides breeding, feeding, and resting areas for more than 280 bird species, making it one of Mexico's finest birdwatching destinations.

The reserve is internationally famous for its spectacular population of American Flamingos, which can be observed throughout the year feeding in the shallow coastal lagoons. However, Río Lagartos offers far more than flamingos alone. Throughout the day we explore a remarkable variety of habitats in search of some of the Yucatán Peninsula's most sought-after specialties, including Yucatán Wren, Black-throated Bobwhite, Mexican Sheartail, Lesser Roadrunner, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Mangrove Swallow, and many others.

From the dry forest at dawn to the mangrove-lined estuaries explored by boat later in the day, every habitat reveals a different community of birds. Raptors circle overhead, shorebirds feed along the mudflats, kingfishers patrol the mangrove channels, and flamingos paint the lagoons pink, creating unforgettable opportunities for birders and photographers alike.
