Surrounded by freshwater lakes and mature tropical forest, Cobá was once the largest Maya city in the northern Yucatán between AD 300 and 900. Today, these same diverse habitats make it one of the peninsula's premier birding destinations and one of the most productive hotspots for observing the region's remarkable birdlife.

Our morning begins around the shores of Lake Cobá, where freshwater wetlands are home to a great variety of birds. Depending on the season, we may encounter species such as Least Grebe, Ruddy Crake, Limpkin, Snail Kite, Purple Gallinule, and many others. The surrounding vegetation is equally rewarding, often producing Gray-crowned Yellowthroat, Blue-gray and Yellow-winged Tanagers, several species of orioles, Yellow-faced Grassquit, Morelet's Seedeater, and many more.

As soon as the archaeological site opens, we are among the first visitors to enter, enjoying the tranquility of the forest before it gets busier. Walking beneath towering trees that now embrace this remarkable ancient city, we search for some of the Yucatán Peninsula's most sought-after birds, including Ocellated Turkey, Lesson's and Turquoise-browed Motmots, Black-headed, Gartered and Collared Trogons, Masked and Black-crowned Tityras, Yucatán, Green and Brown Jays, Yucatán Amazon, and many more.

Depending on the season, it is possible to identify between 60 and 80 bird species during the excursion.

Before returning to your hotel, we enjoy a delicious local brunch, the perfect way to conclude a morning immersed in the birds, history, and landscapes of Cobá.
