Our day begins in the ancient Maya city of Cobá, once one of the most important urban centers in the northern Yucatán between AD 300 and 900. Surrounded by freshwater lakes and mature tropical forest, Cobá is one of the peninsula's premier birding destinations.

 

As we walk beneath towering trees and alongside partially restored temples, we search for many of the region's characteristic birds while discovering the fascinating history of one of the greatest civilizations of the Americas.

At midday, we enjoy a traditional home-cooked meal prepared by a local Maya family. More than just lunch, it's an opportunity to experience authentic regional cuisine, learn a little about daily life in the community, and directly support local families through community-based ecotourism.

After exploring Cobá, we continue to the Maya community of Punta Laguna, where conservation and sustainable tourism go hand in hand. This beautiful community-managed reserve protects an extensive area of tropical forest that is home to one of the Yucatán Peninsula's healthiest populations of wild Spider Monkeys and, with a little luck, Mantled Howler Monkeys. As we explore the forest, we continue birding while learning how local Maya families manage and protect this remarkable ecosystem.

Before returning, we cool off with a refreshing swim in a community-owned cenote, the perfect opportunity to relax while discovering the fascinating limestone geology that has shaped the Yucatán Peninsula for millions of years.
